Bangalore, Dec 16: In a major change in the educational system in Karnataka, the state government has decided to include 8th standard in primary education sector.

Also, 9th std to 12th std will be considered as high school from next academic year onwards.

The decision has been taken as per the national education policy to ensure free and compulsory schooling for all children between the age group of 6 and 14.

Currently, 8th to 10 std is considered high school, followed by pre-university college.

This new education system will be implemented in the next academic year, informed education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri in the legislative council here on Friday December 16.

Also, in another significant development, the high court has directed the state government to not to close any Kannada medium schools in the state.
