Mangalore: City Remembers Martyrs of 1971 War on 'Vijay Diwas'

Mangalore, Dec 16: 'Vijay Diwas' was observed at Kadri park here on Friday December 16 in remembrance of 3500 martyrs of 1971 India-Pakistan war that saw the liberation of Bangladesh.
 
The programme was organized by the Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association.

Nitte University chancellor Dr N Vinay Hegde who was the chief guest honoured the martyrs by offering a floral tribute. He said that children these days take less interest in joining the army, and that lack of respect towards ex-servicemen was one of the reasons for this trend.

"This trend is not good and people need to change their viewpoint," he added.
 
Air vice-marshal Ramesh Karnik (Rtd), Walter Stephen Mendis of Western Institute of Technology, Sharathchandra Bhandary, president of DK Ex-Servicemen’s Association, M B Sadashiva of JD(S) among others were present.
 
A good number of ex-servicemen were present and each one of them paid their respect to the martyrs, however, lack of public participation dampened the spirit of many.

    Never forget the day 16th December 1971. I was a primary student that time.

    Great sacrifice by our bravo soldiers. We salute you and always remember your sacrifice for the motherland.

    I salute and prey for those who did great sacrifice. I watched the movie Jai Bangladesh and felt so bad about the treatment by Pakistani soldiers towards the ladies raping and killing. I remember we were paying the tax we were paying on bus tickets for Bangladesh. What India did for Bangladesh is great. Jay Hind.
