Bantwal: Bishop to Inaugurate Centenary Memorial Loreto English School on Dec 20

Bantwal, Dec 17: The centenary memorial building block of Loreto English Medium High School and Loreto Aided Higher Primary School will be inaugurated on Tuesday December 20.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore diocese will inaugurate the new building block at 4.30 pm on Tuesday.

Mangalore Catholic Board of Education (CBE) secretary Fr Wilson D’Souza, Superior General Sr Agatha Mary, UFS Provincial Superior Sr Lenita D’Souza, Mumbai Provincial Superior Sr I Elina Rodrigues, Bantwal MLA Ramanat Rai, Bantwal block education officer Sudhakar K, Amtady gram panchayat president Bharati S Chowta, social activist Dolphy D’Souza, Belgium entrepreneur Alexis and Irene Menezes couple, Pune education expert alumnus Denis and Irene Menezes will be the chief guests on the occasion. 

Loreto Aided Higher Primary School located at Loreto, 30 km from Mangalore and 5 km south of Bantwal, is celebrating its centenary this year.  The present school was started as Amtady Badaje School, a lower primary school, on July 10, 1911.  Modankap parish priest Fr Balthazar Aranha founded this school with the noble aim of improving value-based quality education for the needy and poor population of Loreto and the surrounding areas irrespective of caste, creed, and religion.

Loreto Church and parish came into existence in 1939 and the school was renamed Loreto School in 1940.  A new building was provided to the school by then correspondent and parish priest Fr Charles P Nazareth who also worked as headmaster of the school that was upgraded to Class V.

It was in 1965, when Fr Alphonsus D’Cunha served as correspondent that Class VI and Class VI were started.  The school building was renovated by Fr Victor D’Souza during 1995–96. Since then, ten parish priests have served as correspondents and contributed to the all-round development of the school.  For the last 100 years, 12 teachers have served as heads of school.  Sr Leena Pereira serves as head teacher of the school now.

Fr Cyprian Pinto, who took charge as Loreto parish priest and correspondent of the school in May 2005, has transformed the whole scenario of Loreto.  He started kindergarten classes with the help of the Ursuline Sisters.  English medium Class VI was started in 2010 and Class VII was started in 2011.
