Mangaluru, Dec 2: The 90th annual day celebration of CAL Bendur took place on December 1, commemorating nearly a century of dedicated service and community building. The grand event began with a thanksgiving Mass in St Sebastian Church, led by Fr Walter D’Souza, vicar of St Sebastian Church and director of CAL. He was joined by Fr Arun Lobo, Assistant Director of CAL Bendur, who delivered an insightful sermon emphasizing the association's spiritual and social contributions over the decades.
The formal celebration started in the Platinum Jubilee Hall and was attended by a distinguished panel of guests, including Fr Walter D’Souza, vicar, Leslie Rego, a prominent Konkani actor, entrepreneur, and chief guest for the evening, Fr Ashwin Cardoza, director of ICYM, diocese of Mangalore, Fr Lawrence Cutinha, director of CAL, Episcopal City Deanery (ECD), Fr Arun Lobo, assistant director of CAL Bendur, Winston Sequeira, president of ICYM, diocese of Mangalore, Vinod D’Souza, vice president and animator of CAL, and Patsy Britto, secretary of PPC.
The program opened with a soulful prayer hymn by CAL members, setting a reverent tone for the evening. Joswin Pinto, President of CAL, warmly welcomed the guests and the audience. This was followed by the annual report, presented by Meagan D’Souza, secretary of CAL, which provided an overview of the association’s activities, milestones, and community service initiatives over the past year.
The highlight of the evening was the felicitation ceremony, recognizing the exceptional contributions and achievements of several individuals. Ethan Mascarenhas was honoured for his remarkable accomplishment in being selected to represent India in the SAARC Swimming Competition held in Pakistan. The chief guest, Leslie Rego, was also felicitated for his stellar performance in the Konkani movie PAYAN. Additionally, Vinod D’Souza, Nelson Monteiro, Jyothy D’Souza, and Deepak D’Souza were acknowledged for their invaluable support and dedication to CAL.
The chief guest, Leslie Rego, in his address, lauded CAL for its consistent efforts in promoting culture and spirituality. Fr Ashwin Cardoza encouraged the youth to actively engage in community service, while Fr Walter D’Souza delivered the presidential address, reflecting on the association’s illustrious 90-year journey and its enduring commitment to fostering faith, unity, and service. As a gesture of appreciation, all CAL members were presented with mementos, recognizing their contributions and dedication.
The celebration continued with a vibrant cultural program titled "Calipso", showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Goan community. The performances included traditional songs and dances, beautifully executed by CAL members, as well as solo and duet songs performed by talented singers such as Joswin Pinto, Paloma, Neil, Delisha, Joelle, Ancelin, and Arlynn. A dance performance by CAL members and an engaging skit presented by Shawn and team captivated the audience with its humour and creativity.
Adding a unique dimension to the event was an exhibition, featuring stunning paintings by Paloma, intricately designed jewellery by Sujay, and a food counter managed by Ren and team, which offered a delightful culinary experience.
The program was further graced by the presence of special guests from Germany, who were warmly welcomed and joined the community in celebrating this milestone event. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the program, appreciating the rich cultural heritage and vibrant performances showcased during the event
The program was seamlessly anchored by the skilled Master of Ceremonies, Jane and Muriel, who ensured the smooth flow of events. Samuel Rodrigues, Joint Secretary of CAL, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the guests, sponsors, and members who contributed to the event's success.
