Udupi, Dec 7: Udupi SP Dr Arun Kumar has clarified that the death of hotel worker Sridhara (38), whose body was found in a pool of blood near Ananta Kalyana Nagara in Manipal on Friday morning, has been confirmed as a suicide and not a murder.
Initially, it was suspected that Sridhara, a resident of Kasarakoda, had been murdered by having his throat slit with a beer bottle. However, a thorough spot inspection and CCTV footage from a nearby shop have revealed that the deceased had slit his throat himself.
Sridhara, who worked at a hotel in Manipal and lived with co-workers near Syndicate Circle, reportedly woke up early in the morning and used a beer bottle to inflict the fatal injury. The act was captured on CCTV, showing him walking to the spot, slitting his throat suddenly, and collapsing.
This rare and gruesome method of suicide left the deceased’s throat almost entirely severed. The beer bottle and an empty bag were found at the scene, but no other items of significance were discovered.
Police suspect the deceased might have consumed narcotics before taking the drastic step. A post-mortem examination was conducted at KMC Manipal.
While the investigation has ruled out foul play, the public has raised concerns and requested the police to probe thoroughly to confirm there was no external involvement.
Dr Arun Kumar confirmed that the CCTV footage substantiates the conclusion of suicide. However, the footage has not been made public due to ongoing investigations.
