Saudi Arabia unveils Milaf Cola: A date-based soft drink aiming to redefine global beverage trends

Riyadh, Dec 7: Saudi Arabia has introduced Milaf Cola, the world’s first soft drink crafted from dates, positioning it as a healthier and eco-friendly alternative to traditional sodas like Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Launched during the Riyadh Date Festival, this innovative beverage is produced by Thurath Al-Madina, a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, as part of the country’s vision to diversify its economy and elevate local products.

A new era for soft drinks

Milaf Cola is not just another addition to the fizzy drink market. Unlike conventional colas, which rely on corn syrup or cane sugar, Milaf Cola uses premium locally sourced dates as its primary ingredient. Packed with fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals like magnesium and potassium, dates are celebrated as a superfood in the Middle East, and their inclusion makes this beverage a healthier option without compromising flavor.

The drink contains no added sugar and adheres to international food safety standards. It also aligns with environmental sustainability goals by using locally sourced ingredients, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting local agriculture and sustainable production practices.

A festival favorite

The Riyadh Date Festival provided the perfect platform for Milaf Cola’s grand unveiling. Saudi agriculture minister Abdulrahman Al-Fadley and Thurath Al-Madina CEO Bander Al-Qahtani officiated the launch, emphasizing the beverage’s potential to revolutionize how dates are consumed globally. Festival attendees eagerly sampled the drink, with many describing its flavor as both nostalgic and refreshingly unique.

“It’s like drinking sunshine, if sunshine tasted like dates and happiness,” remarked one festival-goer, echoing the excitement surrounding this new product.

Vision beyond borders

Milaf Cola’s launch is just the beginning. Thurath Al-Madina has announced plans to expand its beverage line and introduce the product to regional and international markets. The company aims to elevate dates from a traditional Middle Eastern staple to a versatile and trendy global ingredient.

“Milaf Cola is the first step in transforming how the world perceives dates. We are working on a range of innovative products that will showcase the versatility of this superfood,” a company spokesperson shared.

With its blend of health benefits, sustainability, and innovative appeal, Milaf Cola could disrupt the global soda industry and carve a niche for itself among health-conscious consumers. Only time will tell if this date-based drink can rival the giants of the cola world, but its debut has already set a promising stage.
