Mangaluru makes history with first-ever belly dance hafla

Media Release

Mangaluru, Dec 8: On December 6, Mangaluru witnessed a historic event, its first-ever belly dance hafla, ‘Kudla Hafla’. Organized by the dynamic dance community, ShimmyLaine, this gathering celebrated the beauty and grace of belly dance while supporting two worthy causes.

ShimmyLaine, founded by the talented Sharlaine Sequeira, has quickly become a haven for dancers of all levels and genders. With classes offered at Nicky Pinto Studio, Bendorwell, ShimmyLaine is committed to spreading the joy and empowerment of belly dance. At present, they offer belly dance classes to students from not only in Mangaluru, but also Kundapur, Bengaluru, and Dubai.

A hafla, an Arabic term for ‘party’ or ‘gathering’, is a social event where dancers, musicians, and enthusiasts come together to share their love of Middle Eastern music, dance, and culture. Kudla Hafla was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of diversity, empowerment, and compassion.

Kudla Hafla was hosted by the talented MC Raveena Mascarenhas and showcased the talents of over 15 artistes from diverse backgrounds, including homemakers, lecturers, writers, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, and doctors - Preksha, Raveena, Anjali, Dr Shwetha, Nalini, Sushma, Sweety, Shilpa, Dr Febby, Yvette, Dimple, Delma, Aisiri, Meghana and 7-year-old Yashika. Their performances were a testament to the inclusive and empowering nature of belly dance.

The event raised funds for two organizations: Snehadeep and Betharam Brothers. Snehadeep is a charitable organization dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for girls living with HIV/AIDS. Betharam Brothers is a religious congregation committed to education and mission work. Both organizations rely on donations to continue their vital work.

By organizing this ground-breaking event, ShimmyLaine has not only brought belly dance to the forefront of Mangaluru's cultural scene but has also inspired and uplifted the community. As ShimmyLaine continues to grow and expand its reach, it is clear that the future of belly dance in Namma Kudla is bright.
