Bangalore: Milk Price to be Hiked by Rs 5 a Litre?

Bangalore, Dec 19 (DHNS): Milk price in the state is set to undergo one more reverse this year, as Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is asking the state government permission to hike the price of milk by Rs 5 a litre.

The decision has been taken at a KMF board meeting on December 17 and the federation is likely to place its request to the government on Tuesday.

Despite being an autonomous body, the KMF usually sticks by the government’s decision on price hike.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has said he would take a decision keeping the interests of farmers and the consumers in mind once the KMF proposal reaches him.

The hike, if accepted by the government, would increase the price of commonly used toned Nandini milk from Rs 21 to Rs 26.

The hike would also apply correspondingly to all Nandini products such as double toned milk and Shubham milk or standard milk and curd (in kg).

If accepted, this would be the second time the government would be hiking milk prices this year. In February, the price of milk was increased by Rs 2 against the KMF proposal of Rs 3.

KMF Managing Director A S Premnath said the hike has been proposed following pressure from all the 13 milk unions in the state, who have asked for a Rs 5 price hike citing increased input costs in milk production.

The dairy farmers have been asking for the hike for a long time, he added.  Insisting that the hike is necessary for both farmers and customers, Premnath said that KMF prices would continue to be amongst the lowest in the country even if the price were to be hiked to Rs 26 per litre.

Unions procure milk from farmers at Rs 18.90 per litre. The KMF is yet to fix the quantum hike in milk procurement.

If the benefit of the price hike goes to farmers I am happy. Generally the major share of the price hike goes to middlemen and Nandini...!!!??? It is high time people (including my wife) realize that there are other food items good for health other than only milk....!!!????

I don’t mind you guys raising price of milk by Rs.5 but my question is if you guys can afford a Rs.5 on milk why do you make such a big song and dance when petrol goes up by Rs.2. Stop being an HYPOCRITE.

BJP's Punch line during every election is 'BJP is the answer to price rise and corruption, Please vote BJP to power'!, Now we in Karnataka are seeing both the answers! We forget everything easily and again we will vote you to power!

Have you raised a Cow in your house?

Do you know how much it costs and efforts to produce a Litre of Milk??

Its easy to pass judgement on others,,, try to put yourself in their shoes,,, then perhaps you wont pass these silly comments....

Government has lots of money for corruption,,, they can reduce corruption and money saved could be used to give subsidy to farmers,,, so users wont have to pay more.....

When the price is increased to almost all the house hold items, why not for the milk. I think Rs 5 hike is quite reasonable. Rs 5 hike will not make any big impact on people, because today the minimum wage is 6000 to 9000 Rs per month when so called poor people are ready to spend more from their earnings to liquor without any problem, do you think Rs 5 hike for the milk will make any difference ?

If KMF had freedom from Reddys, Yeddys, Cheddys, the milk producing community would got the real value for their product and the consumer would get value for their money.

Milk is a essential food for all of us.Increasing the price of milk will effect each and every person of this society.Govt should give extra grants to consideration, benefitting to the consumer and the farmer without any negative impact, as a whole.

Mr.Prabhu, Govt is hiking the price. But end of the day it won,to reach to farmer. Farmer has to spend more money for expensive cattle feed & grass/ dry paddy grass. This is personal experience.

KMF is a house of corruptions and what happened to Revanna's multi core corruption charges?A good management and corrupt free admin of KMF can offer us even less price from existing one.

WHENEVER THERE IS A HIKE PROPOSAL BY KMF WHY ONLY CONSUMER HIKE IS PROPOSED HIDING THE AMOUNT FARMERS GET OUT OF THE HIKE. LET BOTH KMF AND GOVT. TRANSPERENT IN THE MATTER. ONE MORE THING IS BOTH KMF AND GOVT. IS TRYING TO CONFUSE PEOPLE WITH MANY VARITIES THEREBY PEOPLE GET CHEATED IN THE MARKET FOR SO MANY REASONS. SINCE MILK IS NECESSITY OF COMMONMAN STANDARD VARIATIONS AS LOW,MEDIUM AND HIGH ARE LEADING TO LACK OF NUTRITION IN INFANTS AND STATE GOVT. ITSELF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MALNUTRITION.

India is a agricultural dominated country.Hence farming community should get their right due of income.Milk price rise is one way to get them enriched. When we can shell out money for day to day needs by drinking mineral water, there should not be any problem in milk price rise.
