Murudeshwar, Dec 11: In a tragic incident, four Class 9 girls from a residential school drowned in the sea during an educational tour at Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada district on Tuesday, police reported on Wednesday.
A group of 46 students and six teachers from Morarji Desai Residential School, Mulabagilu, in Kolar district, had visited Murudeshwar as part of a school trip.
The incident occurred around 5:30 pm when students, accompanied by teachers, went to the beach. Despite repeated warnings from lifeguards, seven students ventured into the rough sea. Three girls were swept away by strong currents, and one girl died at the scene.
Lifeguards and emergency agencies managed to rescue the remaining three students, who were rushed to a hospital. They are now reported to be out of danger, according to a senior police officer.
A search operation involving lifeguards, home guards, fishermen, and police recovered the bodies of the three missing girls on Wednesday morning.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
