Udupi, Dec 11: A fraudster from Tamil Nadu has been arrested for deceiving a private five-star hotel in Manipal with a fake conference meeting.
The Manipal police successfully arrested the accused, who has been targeting prestigious five-star hotels across the country and defrauding them.
The accused has been identified as Bimsent John (67) from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
On December 7, Bimsent booked a room in a private hotel, claiming he was attending a conference. He assured the hotel manager that he would pay the advance amount on December 9, check out on December 12, and stay in the room. He dined at the hotel and accumulated a bill of Rs 39,298, which he fled without paying.
A case was registered at the Manipal police station regarding the incident. A team led by Manipal police inspector Devaraj successfully apprehended the accused on December 9. The investigation revealed that the accused had previously stayed at prestigious five-star hotels in states such as Delhi, Thane, and Kollam, where he accumulated bills amounting to thousands of rupees before fleeing without making any payments.
The accused, a graduate, has a total of 49 cases registered against him in various police stations across the country. He is unmarried and was first arrested for a similar fraud case in Delhi. In that case, he served a five-year prison sentence in 1996, according to the police.
The Manipal police produced the accused before the Udupi court, which has ordered 14 days of judicial custody for him.
