International Status to Mangalore Airport: Another Promise Broken

International Status to Mangalore Airport: Another Promise Broken

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Dec 20: Exactly a month ago, on November 20, M Veerappa Moily had assured Mangaloreans of international status to Mangalore Airport. Come December 21, and yet another promise will go unfilfilled.

Mangalore Airport will be marking its diamond jubilee on Wednesday December 21. After Moily's promise, which had come in such clear terms that there was hardly any scope for doubt, Mangaloreans had been waiting eagerly for the formal announcement. Moily on his November 20 visit to the city had in fact stated that all was ready and only the announcement was pending, which was expected in a few days' time.

However, the 'days' have turned into a month, and still there is no sign of international status to the airport.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Moily explained that everything was indeed ready, and the proposal was to be tabled in the winter session of the Parliament. However, at the last moment the civil aviation minister was changed, and Ajit Singh took over the mantle from Vayalar Ravi, and hence the process was affected. Now, the proposal will be introduced in the next session of the Parliament, Moily said.

That means, Mangaloreans will have to wait for a few more months for the dream to come true, and there will be no 'diamond jubilee gift' that many were hoping for.

The airport was inaugurated on December 21, 1951 with a maiden flight carrying MP Srinivas Mallya and PM Jawaharlal Nehru. The length of the runway was about 3,000 feet, suitable for operation of smaller aircraft. The airport witnessed no improvement for 20 years, and then the existing runway was increased by 2,000 feet in 1971 and again to 5,330 feet during 1981–82.  The process of laying a concrete second runway began in 1989 and was completed in 2006.

The airport saw its maiden international flight to Dubai in October 2006. Thereafter, it saw rapid changes and advancement, with a new terminal building being inaugurated in 2010.

Mangalore Airport is currently a domestic customs airport with permission to operate only a few international flights, to west Asia. The proposal to grant the status of international airport has been in limbo for quite a while now with organisations, NRI forums and local politicians making constant demands, but despite several promises, it remains a dream. With the 2010 Air India crash that took 158 lives, the prospect was badly hit as concerns were raised about its safety, and the then aviation minister Praful Patel announced a 're-look' into the proposal. However, Vayalar Ravi in October this year promised to grant the status 'soon', followed by Moily setting the December 21 as deadline.

The wait, however, is still on.

Promises are meant to be broken. 'I was misquoted' is the often quoted defense for promises made and never kept.We the people of Mangalore are the greatest maamus who believe in everything we hear from politicians. Mr Moily is the same person who promised to catch Veerappan within 6 months after he became CM of Karnataka, it is a different matter that he was caught and killed after a decade. How dare the people in this forum write some negative comments about Mr Moily whose party has given us the freedom. Well done Mr Moily, you are a star of Mangalore representing bunch of maamus.

"barking dog seldom bites" Virappa Moily is not the authority to give International standard to Mangalore Airport. More over this airport is built without any standards!!! The Runway...the road leading to the airport...everything is below international standards....so please don't expect the international standards to another 10 years and until and unless they change entire layout.

No surprise, there is no value for politicians promises, they come during the voting time promise, fool the people and elect and go to Parliment then they don't remember you for 5 years. They don't want any reputed foriegn airliner to operate to Mangalore and hence deny the tag of International Aiport. But they don't know the problems passengers face in Air India expreses, while visiting his home country after sweating hard for one or 2 years in the Gulf. Also it shows how much importance has been given to Mangalore by the fact that there is no improvement in airport after the inaguaration till 1971 and then present runway took 17 years to complete. In this modern era this is sheer negligence of one region for somebody's benefit. So We Mangaloreans should wake up and no matter which political party if he is not fulfilling his promises don't support them.

We should not be emotional in this matter. All facilities should be in order, before giving international status. You will find bus/car/rickshaw in all international airports of India whereas you can travel only by taxis to/from Mangalore airport. On December 3,2011 I hired a rickshaw and we had to pay Rs. 10 parking charge (just for ping). Therefore, first of all, let us come together and built the necessary infrastructure. Then we can demand for international status. At least some city buses can be diverted to airport, which will help even visitors and staff.

    Jane,
People like me residing in the Arabian Gulf travel very often with our families to and from Managlore Airport and I know a lot of people who travel trough Mumbai and Bangalore as they do not want to travel by Air India Express.

If you are talking of potential, I would like to correct you that Managlore has a lot of potential as there are quite a few industries, hospitals of international repute and quality educational institutes of international repute which see a lot of NRI and foreign visitors.

By declaring the Airport at Managlore as an International Airport, we will be opening up the airprot for operations by international airliners and this will greatly improve the quality of air travel from and to Mangalore. Having said that, this process should be done after increasing the length of the runway, making provisions for the extra splii over area required beyond the runway, and improving all other safety aspects of the airport.

The facilities should be brought up to the standards of an International Airport. Finally, the politicians should stop making statements to appease thier vote banks without ascertaining all the facts and ground reality. Instead, they should work towards the improvement of the airport.

There are four major airports surrounding mangalore airport, that surpass bajpe in infrastructure, space and most importantly economic significance. Physically MLR cannot receive international status because it falls short of several IATA requirements. Besides look at the economics and the safety aspects, a couple of thousand mangloreans travel a domestic distance (Gulf and back, which is shorter than MLR -IXJ !!!)annually , there is no physical space to expand the runway, from trade and commerce perspective too, MLR falls way behind COK, CCJ,TRV and BLR which are within 100- 300 kms range. Politicians can make tall claims... but airports are governed by intl. rules and regulations, MLR doesn't meet EU/Intl standards from its location, surface area and its very physical characteristics...to be called an international airport. Unlike Kerala, karnataka does not have significant air traffic. One BLR itself looks deserted in the international lounge except early dawn... how will MLR manage relevance? Its easy to blame governements, speak ill of our airline, curse our airports, curse our infrastructure, but what is difficult for most of us is to own all of this as our own...

They are the root cause of corruption and power peddling. If we need anything done we have to find power brokers - What a culture they have created- Shame.

Only reason the country does well is coz of the smart people and Beauracrats of India - NOT politicians.

do we need this surname? . Mangalore is already a International city if not by infrastructure but by its people all over the world.
The surname to Mangalore airport neither Domestic or International it does not make any difference as long as the infrastructure, ruway is capable of landing and takeoff of the passenger air craft’s from middle east where our loved one’s make money and visit Mangalore now and then.
The Mallu yaar Ravi could have done it on time if he really interested but he already has another international airport to please his fans. Now Moily has promised but now he revealed the reasons for delay and good that we know the reasons for the delay. It takes years to bring the LOKPAl bill to the table of parliament so we have to wait for the ‘SURNAME ‘ Mangalore International..

Weak ministers of Karnataka to Central Govt,Weak MP,especially Mangalore constituency and more importantly the lack of political will power of All MPs from Karnataka makes things very difficult to formally announce Mangalore Airport to full pledged Intl Airport. In this regard we have to learn lesson from Kerala, a tiny state which has multiple International airports.Having said that changed portfolio of CIVIL AVIATION Ministry to Ajith Singh of Lok Dal in UPA Govt in the last movement might changed the scenario.Unlucky Mangaloreans once again and hope for the best in 2012 and I am optimistic.
