Karkala: NMAMIT hosts INDO – UK collaborative international conference NMCCER 2024

Karkala, Dec 13: The centre for new materials and surface engineering, department of chemistry at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, hosted a SPARC-funded two-day international conference on New Materials in Carbon Capture and Environmental Remediation (NMCCER 2024) on December 5 and 6. The conference is the outcome of a joint project awarded to Dr Santosh Tiwari, associate professor, NMAM Institute of Technology and Dr Oluwafunmilola Ola, University of Nottingham. This significant event brought together leading academics and researchers from the UK, Germany, and Denmark to discuss cutting-edge developments in new materials and carbon capture technologies.

The chief guest for the inaugural event was Prof Ajayan Vinu from the University of Newcastle, Australia. In his inaugural address, Prof Vinu emphasized the importance of carbon capture in addressing pressing global environmental challenges. The chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University), N Vinaya Hegde, highlighted the need for rapid structural reforms in academia to enable advanced research. He commended the organizing team, especially Dr Santosh Tiwari, for their contributions to research and innovation. The discussions on the first day underscored the need for developing novel nanomaterials, such as graphene, MXenes, and other functional nanostructures, as potential solutions to current environmental challenges.

The guests of honor, Dr M S Moodithaya, vice chancellor of Nitte DU, and Dr Gopal Mugeraya, vice president (technical education) of Nitte DU, shared their insights on fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration to tackle pressing environmental issues.

The conference, coordinated under the leadership of Dr Arti S Bhatt and supported by the faculty and staff of the department of chemistry, featured a diverse range of sessions, including presentations by renowned scientists and discussions on emerging trends in nanomaterials and green technologies. Dr Ajayan Vinu, Dr Yanqiu Zhu, Prof Yogendra Kumar Mishra, Prof Prashanth, Prof Nannan Wang, Prof Fang Xu, Dr Santosh Tiwari, Prof Oluwafunmilola Ola and Dr Sahoo were the resource persons who delivered plenary and keynote address during this two-day conference.

Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar, principal of NMAMIT, Nitte, welcomed the gathering, while Dr Arti Bhatt, head of the department of chemistry, highlighted the significance of the event. Dr Ranjitha Rai, faculty member of the department of chemistry, introduced the chief guest. Dr Sarvajith M S delivered the vote of thanks during valedictory and Dr Shreya Kanth served as the master of ceremonies. The contributions of teaching and non-teaching faculties and the research scholars of the department of chemistry were acknowledged as unparalleled.
