Belagavi, Dec 19: The State Legislative Assembly on Thursday witnessed unprecedented scenes with all ruling Congress members staging a novel protest by holding photos of the architect of Indian Constitution Dr B R Ambedkar in front of their seats against Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his derogatory remarks while opposition BJP and JDS members staged walk out.
In his reply to the debate in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday on 75 years of Indian Constitution, the second most prominent leader in BJP after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remarked that it has become a ‘fashion’ for the opposition members to chant Ambedkar’s name frequently and that if they had chanted Bhagwan Ram’s name as many times as they do Ambedkar then they would go to heaven.
After the BJP and JDS members staged a walk out from the Assembly against ruling Congress members staging a novel protest by holding photos of the architect of Dr Ambedkar in front of their seats in the Belagavi Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar termed Amit Shah’s derogatory remarks against Ambedkar as ‘height of arrogance’ and asked whose name can be chanted but for Ambedkar’s name and swearing by the Constitution.
“It is our duty to honour and respect the Architect of our Constitution. We believe in Basavanna’s teaching of Work is Workship,” Shivakumar said.
The Deputy Chief Minister justified the ruling Congress members for their protest against Amit Shah by holding Ambedkar’s photos in front of their seats and asserted that there is need for a wider debate on the insult to Dr Ambedkar.
Countering the poster war by the ruling Congress party, the BJP also brought posters bearing the slogan 'Congress insulted Ambedkar' into the House and placed them on their desks.
