Udupi, Dec 26: A call for bundh in protest against the UPCL project in nine villages here on Monday December 26 recieved positive response, as shops closed and transport system came to a halt.

A protest was led by Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene, supported by several organisations, labour unions and traders. Shops and other establishments closed their shutters and backed the strike.

The bundh was largely peaceful as well as successful.

Transport unions too extended their support, and vehicular movement in some of the major roads in the district came to a standstill.

The protest received much support from the fishing community too, with associations in Padubidri zone and fishermen in Yermal, Ucchil, Muloor, Kaup and other places staying away from work.

However, emergency services like ambulance, so also supply of essential commodities like milk and newspaper were unaffected by the strike.

Tight police security was deployed everywhere to prevent any untoward incident.

Nobody wants to leave their mother land unless they are forced to due to some constraints.Apart from lack of good infrastrucure, our country is suffering from corruption, communilism, illiteracy, strikes, ignorance, price rise, hatress , power shortage, etc, etc.All these problems are seldom in developed foreign countries. For this reason many Indian business establishments are shifting their base to other countries.

    @ Kiran Acharya,
Just looking into the photographs you cannot comment 'How many of these are REAL farmers anyway!'......
We are fighting against this Thermal power plant not just today, even from past 2 decades, from the day i was just 5 years old.
As per the report Karnataka has got sufficient electric generation and most of the power loss is due to inefficient handling and transmission. Here the thermal plant is set just for the monetary gain by so called political leadres.
The problem sounds funny sitting in Manipal, but the real pain is that most of the vegetaion has stopped bearing fruits now, specially Coconuts. The salt content in air has increased tremendously and life of RCC building will be hardly 5 years from now. You cannot use any iron for gates, fencing or structure. We are now so called ' Mooka Prekshakaroo'. Now we are facing the problem tomorrow whole Udupi and DK will face this if we neglect it. Please wake up and support to this agitation. We Tulunada people have to get united.

Those commenting from outside India, please analyze this...If there were job opportunities for you at your home town, you would not have left this beautiful Udupi/DK. For job opportunities one needs to have infrastructure...I am sure all these protestors are supported by interests which do not like development in Udupi / DK. How many of these are REAL farmers anyway!

What the agitating farmers are doing the very right thing. Despite several warnings they are not taking any steps at improving their plant thus endangering the lives of people and destruction of the beautiful flora and fauna. UPCL indeed deserves the boot!! Keep up the pressure dear farmers!!

Very good comments Mr. Ronald, hope you have the same concern towards the hapeless farmers who are protesting out there. I am sure people who sat in the dharna out there in Padubidri town were not any political clowns instead they were the sufferers whose land and livilihood is destroyed by UPCL.

    @Kiran Acharya,
This agitation was not against poor generation at UPCL.
This agitation was basically against poor waste management by UPCL affecting water bodies, Corps mainly water table making it salty in the area. I Don't understand whats itching your ass while Govt is providing free power to farmers, Free power in Karnataka is mainly because its economy mainly depends on agriculture and fisheries. Upon Udipi's only on above two factors. Have a nice Day!!

    I agree with Dr.Kiran Acharya,Manipal.
I have seen the harrassment by leaders of farmers, when I was working as section officer in MESCOM office in kinnigoly area where there are large no. of IP(irrigation pump)sets.During load shedding(due to shortage of power),they storm to office and use abussive languages.

Season of celebrations... so many weddings and programmes...useless people and do not love enjoyment of life… envy joy are out there for bandh!! Infect creating a bandh of personal and community freedom!! They have no prosperity nor they allow others to prosper!! Such bundh should be held during third week of May where there are no social activities!! People can stay indoors and protect from humid weather!! Certainly not during good weather of December end!!

It is very strange to see Farmers (who demand free power supply to their pumpsets) and Fishermen (who need power for the ice plants) protesting against Power generation!
Very same people also protest when there is load shedding!!!

I wish the elected Political leaders/representatives from the area will take note of this bundh and its impact and act soon to address the long pending issue of this kind before it is too late.Understand the problems faced by the people residing in and around the vicinity of UPCL-Nagarjun Project. They can not simply agitate. They are agitating because they are really encountering the problems on daily basis.Although I was not able to attend physically as I was away from the town,I was mentally with the agitators/people who are fighting for their rights/genuine cause since I am belonging to the same place/area.I always support them.Hope all the political leaders/representatives,concerned departments, organizations, unions, authorities, company representatives should sit together and settle the long pending issue amicably once for all without compromising/hurting the sentiments of the people without any further delay.
    Jai Agitators.
