Bangalore: 10,000 Register for Jail Bharo in Karnataka: IAC

Bangalore, Dec 26 (PTI): India Against Corruption (IAC) today requested the Karnataka Government to provide temporary accommodation to house its activists participating in Anna Hazare's "jail bharo" programme for a strong Lokpal Bill starting from December 30 citing lack of space in prisons.

The plea for identifying space to lodge those who would court arrest as part of the programme was made by IAC activist Prithvi Reddy, a Team Anna Core Committee member, during a meeting he had with state Chief Secretary S V Ranganath.

Ranganath told reporters here that at least 10,000 people, including 7,000 in Bangalore, have registered in Karnataka for the "jail bharo" programme whereas jails in the state have capacity only for 10,000 inmates and already housed at least 8,000.

Sources said the government was considering the State's Armed Reserve Police ground to lodge those participating in the jail bharo programme.

The IAC members would also commence their three-day fast at the Freedom Park here from tomorrow expressing solidarity with Hazare who is staging a fast in Mumbai over the Lokpal bill.

Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy Iyengar, who is spearheading the stir in Bangalore, and Raitha Sangha leader Kodihalli Chandrasekhar have demanded strong Lokpal bill.

Dear Mahendra shetty, what you said is sent percent right. But you forget to add something. In Karnataka there is a strong Lokayukta system in place, Lokayukta has implicated few senior ministers in his report to the goverment and instructed to take action since augaust 2011. it almost 5 months now and no action has been taken on this issue yet. Are this goverment also infulenced by italians ?
The moral of the story is how much power full is the Lokpal or Loakuakta set up, if the goverment is not proactive and biased no law can be effectively implimanted. If great leader like Anna Hazzare during his Banaglore rally kept mum on this issue out of obligation,(beacuse party rulling in Karnataka is supporting his cause in Delhi) how we can accept feble goverments can enforce the laws against thier friends.

@Rafiq, Kaup/Dubai, what is undemocratic about Annas protest? It took 44 years for the successive governments and still no consensus, if people didn’t voice their anger even in the next 44 years the bill will not be a reality. He never challenged parliament, instead he has challenged who is sitting there. Tell me one thing, are the people of this country are superior or the politicians. The plain truth is that all most all corrupt politicians do not want a noose around their neck, so they can plunder tax payers money without accountability.

Its sad to know that we ignore the parliament where a law should be passed than street, all respect to Annaji but the way he is adopting is totally un democratic. People will demonstrate for various reason including newly opened DC office where there are couple of Devotional points of one community where as the DC office belongs to the people of Whole Karnataka.
