Udupi: Man dies after steep fall in attempt to hang self as rope snaps

Udupi, Dec 30: A man lost his life in a tragic suicide attempt when the noose he used snapped, causing him to fall from a height of over 20 feet at his residence in Badagubettu village's Navagraha Colony on Monday, December 30.

The deceased, identified as Melroy Fernandes (55), son of F J A Fernandes, had tied the noose to the iron grill of the first-floor roof of his house. As he struggled, the rope broke under his weight, resulting in a fatal fall to the yard below. He sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.

Manipal police station inspector Anil Kumar, ASI Nagesh Naik, and personnel Vidya conducted the legal procedures. Forensic experts Prasanna, Lavanya, and Harish inspected the scene. The mortal remains were shifted to the mortuary at Manipal Hospital with assistance from social worker Nityananda Olakadu.

According to a letter from the health and family welfare ministry, the deceased had pledged his organs for donation. Efforts are underway to ensure the organs are sent to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
