Karkala: 'Punishment' Claim Proves True - Informer Sadashiva Gowda Found Dead

Karkala, Dec 29: The claim by a caller, who identified himself to be a naxal activist named Vishu, on December 22 that Sadashiva Gowda (50) from Kabbinale had been slain by them as punishment for his being a police informer, has been proved true.

Gowda’s body was found in the forest region of Shantabolerigudda in Nadpal village, Someshwar, about 15 km off Kabbinale. The body was found by a police team led by Karkala rural police circle inspector, Vijayaprasad, on Wednesday afternoon.

Gowda’s body was found tied to a banyan tree in the forest region, in half-sitting position. His body was fastened to the tree at the waist, while his hands were tied with nylon rope. His face was found to have been covered by material used by military personnel in their uniforms. The body is partly decomposed, and it is suspected that he was fired at and killed, after brutally torturing him, telltale marks of which are found on his body. Pamphlets hailing Maoists, and warning police informers on behalf of coastal area committee of Maoists, were found near his body.

It is suspected that naxal activist Vikram Gowda’s gang is behind this barbaric killing. Sadashiva Gowda was unmarried, and had not heeded advice of friends, family members, and well-wishers against having any contacts with either the police or naxals, as he had received warnings from naxals.

Tengamaru, a village located about two km away from the spot where Gowda’s  body is found, has only a handful of houses, one of which belongs to the family of Govinda Gowda, uncle of Sadashiva Gowda. After Govinda Gowda died three years ago, his family members shifted to Kabbinale. Sadashiva Gowda used to visit this deserted house once a week, on every Sunday. Sadashiva Gowda used to collect forest produce from there, bring it to Kabbinale, and sell the same here.

The reporters who visited Govinda Gowda’s house in Tengamaru on Wednesday found that the front door was locked and the rear door was wide open. Cooking materials were strewn around on the floor, while a utensil with cooked rice was found in the kitchen. It is evident that Sadashiva Gowda had left for forest to collect forest produce, after cooking rice, but could not come back to consume it, as naxals who were waiting for him, dragged him away and killed him.

Anti Naxal Force commandant, Alok Kumar, superintendent of police, Ravikumar, deputy superintendent of police, Santosh Kumar, and Ganesh Hegde, district crime intelligence bureau inspector, visited the spot. A team of 75 police have been posted to guard the spot. The police plan to transport the mortal remains of Gowda for conducting post mortem, on Thursday December 29.
