Udupi, Dec 30: Upendra Kumar (23), a native of Uddinahitlu in Tenkanidiyoor village here, who was a soldier serving the Indian Army, was killed near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday December 28. Indications point to the possibility that he was killed by railway dacoits, with whom he was engaged in exchange of fire.

The family of Upendra got information about his death on Thursday. Upendra is survived by two elder brothers and a younger brother.

Upendra’s family was very poor. He lost his parents early in life. Since a very young age, he used to get up at 2 am, reach Malpe fishing port, and work there as labourer to unload fishes. He was an expert climber of coconut trees. With hard work and firm determination, he completed PUC education through Poornaprajna evening college here, and bagged job in a private  organization.

He was absorbed in Indian Army about four years ago. He was posted to Jammu and Kashmir as well as Madhya Pradesh during his service.

Upendra had visited his close ones here during Deepavali festival this year. His relatives and friends are shell-shocked at the sudden demise of Upendra, who remained committed to principles, and knew the value of hard work.
