Udupi, Jan 9: Tamil Nadu State BJP unit president K Annamalai will address the "Constitution Day" programme as the chief guest at 11 am on January 11, at Town Hall, Udupi.

Uday Kumar Shetty, division convener of the Constitution Day Committee, spoke at a press conference on Thursday, January 9, saying, “November 26, 1949, marks the historic day when the Indian Constitution, drafted under the leadership of Dr B R Ambedkar, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared this day as "Constitution Day", initiating its annual observance.”

Shetty also criticised the Congress government, stating, “To highlight the truth about the Congress Party’s alleged unconstitutional and anti-democratic actions, despite claiming to be the protector of the Constitution, Citizens for Social Justice and various Dalit and Backward Class organisations have collaborated to launch a two-month-long statewide campaign, Samvidhan Samman Abhiyaan, from November 26, 2024, to January 26, 2025.”

Shetty went on to say, “The Congress Party has amended the Constitution 75 times. Of these, non-Congress governments were responsible for 31 amendments, while the BJP-led governments accounted for 22 amendments. Congress has been accused of consistently undermining Dr Ambedkar’s vision. The 38th, 39th, and 42nd Amendments introduced during the Emergency reportedly disrupted the foundational principles of the Constitution. Congress prioritised self-interest in every amendment, while the BJP has focused on amendments that align with national interests, such as the Women’s Reservation Bill to ensure representation and the implementation of GST to promote the principle of ‘One Nation, One Tax.’ As part of this campaign, Constitution Day programmes will be held in each district to shed light on these facts.”

The press conference was attended by Udupi district BJP Chief Secretary Reshma Uday Shetty, along with leaders Srikanth Nayak, Rathnakar Indrali, and Chandra Panchavati.
