Udupi: Annamalai slams Cong on Constitution, accuses party of ignorance & vote bank politics

Udupi, Jan 11: Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai criticised Congress and its supporters for their lack of understanding of the Constitution, stating, “Congress created wrong notions about Ambedkar. Those who are roaming with red books do not know how many articles are in our constitution, how many times it has been amended, or suspended,” he said during his address at the Samvidhan Samman programme organised by Citizens for Social Justice in Udupi.

Annamalai also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting, “Those claiming the constitution is in danger do not know anything about it. They don’t even know how many articles and pages the constitution consists of. Nehru and Indira Gandhi amended the constitution in a dictatorial manner. Congress projected Ambedkar as a leader of a particular community, but Ambedkar had great ideas on irrigation and the economy, which he was never given a chance to express. Congress is doing vote bank politics in the name of Ambedkar. It makes no sense for grandchildren to carry red books of the constitution when, in reality, their grandparents and parents made numerous amendments to it. It’s more important to strengthen the constitution than to save it. There’s no constitution without us, and we cannot exist without the constitution.”

Annamalai further criticised the Congress-led governments of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, saying, “Nehru and Indira Gandhi gave the Bharat Ratna to themselves, but no one thought to give it to Ambedkar. The way Indira Gandhi made amendments to the constitution was a setback for our democracy. This has negatively impacted our democracy. To repair this damage, we needed governments led by Morarji Desai, V P Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and now the Modi government. The constitution has been amended 106 times. The Vajpayee government made 14 amendments, and the Modi government has done 8 amendments.”

During the event, the book “Samvidhana Badalayisiddu Yaru?” written by Vikas Puttur was released.

Praffulla Malladi of Mysuru spoke about the newly released book. The programme was presided over by Gokul Das Barukur, and Kidiyuru Uday Kumar Shetty, division coordinator of Samvidhan Samman Abhiyan, was also present. Reshma Uday Shetty, district convener, welcomed the attendees, and Ratnakar Indrali compered the programme.
