Udupi, Jan 15: The annual tradition of ‘Choornatsava’ marked by the grand pulling of chariots was celebrated at Sri Krishna Math on January 15 with great pomp and splendor.

The festival, observed the day after Makar Sankranti, drew thousands of devotees who gathered to participate in the festivities and witness the grandeur of Lord Krishna.

The occasion holds special significance as it is believed that Madhwacharya established the idol of Lord Krishna in Udupi on this very day. To commemorate the event, the Sapthotsava is celebrated every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, spanning six nights and culminating in a daylong celebration on Makar Sankranti. On this day, special worship is done by placing the Lord Krishna and the main deity in the Brahma Ratha (Chariot).

After performing pooja rituals, the Utsava Moorthi’s of Sri Krishna and Mukhyaprana was placed in the Brahma Ratha. The chariot was then ceremonially pulled through the Car Street, accompanied by a large gathering of devotees who chanted hymns and celebrated with devotion. One of the unique traditions of the festival involved the distribution of Prasadam, including coins and food to the devotees.

Following the chariot procession, the sacred bathing ritual, ‘Avabhrutotsava’ of the idols was performed at the Madhwa Sarovara at the Math, marking the conclusion of the event.

The celebration was led by Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Prayaya Sri Puthige Sri Krishna Math, accompanied by Junior Pontiff Sri Sushreendra Theertha Swamiji.
