Bangkok, Jan 3 (IANS): A total of 241 people have been killed and 2,382 injured in the first four days of New Year holiday week in Thailand, said the country's Road Safety Centre.
Some 2,167 road accidents took place in four days (Dec 29, 2011 to Jan 1, 2012). Last year, 2,473 accidents were recorded during the same period of the year, Xinhua quoted Thailand's Road Safety Centre as stating.
While northern province of Chiang Rai reported the highest number of accidents with 85 while most deaths were reported in northeastern province of Buri Ram with 16.
According to Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri, on New Year's Day, the fourth day of the New Year travel period, the Road Safety Centre reported 562 accidents.
Over 47 percent of the accidents were caused by drunk driving, followed by about 20 percent by over speeding and motorcycles were involved in most of the accidents, he said.
