Mangalore: Unique ‘Gomandala-Go Pooja’ Begins at Nehru Maidan

Mangalore, Jan 7: A unique programme ‘Gomandala-Gopooja’ organized by Govanithashraya Trust of the city was inaugurated at Nehru Maidan here at ‘Godhuli Muhurtha’ on Friday January 6.
 
This is the first ever such programme held in the city where cows, which Hindus believe to be sacred, will be worshipped on three days before concluding on Sunday January 8.

Earlier, before the commencement of the stage programme, the worship of the idol of deity Gopalakrishna was performed and the devotees took part with devotion and fervour.
 
Shree Ramananda Swami of Shree Kshetra Kollya and Shree Rajashekarananda Swami of Vajradehi Mutt were present.
 
Presiding over the programme, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that there is need for stringent laws to curb the slaughtering of cows and added that such slaughter should be severely punished by law. He said that after the independence of this country, the people expected two things—one being Ram Mandir and the other being the safeguarding of cows which they consider sacred and equal to their own mother. He urged the union government to pass an act to stop slaughtering of cows.
 
The stage programme began with ‘Veda Ghosha’ by Sharada Vidyalaya students. Prof M B Puranik welcomed. Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty and Raviraj Hegde of KMF were also present.
 
Hundreds of cows thronged Nehru Maidan and devotees will be allowed to perform ‘Go Pooja’ over the next two days. Various breeds of cows were on display for viewing and buying. As a special attraction, a small 10-year-old cow measuring just 73 cm, which set a record, is also present.
