Mangalore: Gandhi Shilpa Bazaar Under Way in City

Mangalore, Jan 7: A national level exhibition-cum-sale titled, ‘Gandhi Shilpa Bazaar’ was inaugurated at Hotel Woodlands in the city on Friday January 6. The exhibition, being held under the aegis of the ministry of textiles in the union government and Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation, will be on till the 15th of this month. It will be open between 10 am and 8.30 pm.

It was inaugurated by MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, in the presence of Parameshwar, executive director of the said corporation, senior assistant director of Central Handicrafts Development Corporation, Prabhakar, Salahuddin, G V Nair, etc. Parameshwar explained that the exhibition is named after Mahatma Gandhi, taking note of his love for indigenous products.

Over 150 skilled artisans and craftsmen will be exhibiting and selling the artifacts created by them at the exhibition. Colourful Dhokra artifacts, art forms from Orissa which are created on palmyra leaves, carpets, ornaments used by tribals, products from Bihar which are anointed with lac, products made of wool, jute art items from West Bengal, pottery items from north east India, coloured, intricately carved painted items from Rajasthan, and paper mesh work of art are some of the items that are for sale at the said venue.

The visitors also have the option to choose from woolen products from Jammu and Kashmir, pearl jewellery and embroidered zari items from Andhra Pradesh, finely carved sandalwood and other wood-carved art forms from Karnataka, bronze art bearing similarities with the art form prevalent during the period of Chola kings from Kerala, stone-carved items, Chanderi saris, Phulkari and Madhubani paintings etc.
