Mangalore, Jan 9: In an incident that has exposed the unhygenic conditions of some of the trains run by the Indian Railways, a group of agitated passengers stopped Netravati Express they were travelling by and protested against the rats and bugs found in their compartments.
The incident took place when the Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai Netravati Express halted at Kankanady Junction here on Sunday January 8 at around 11. 45 pm.
As soon as the train stopped, a group of passengers, including students alighted from an AC coach of the train, and marched towards the station officer. They complained that there were bugs and rats in their coach, which were not only annoying them but also giving rise to health hazards.
An eyewitness said that one of the passengers even showed blood marks on his skin where the bugs had bitten him.
The protest went on for about 25 minutes, during which the train was not allowed to resume its journey.
Some of the passengers, comprising those from other states like Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi and others, demanded a change of coach.
Railway officials arrived at the spot to sort out the matter and get the train moving again.
Finally, as some of the students were on their way to Mumbai to attend important interviews, they were forced to compromise so that they could reach their destination on time. They went back to their coaches and the train resumed.
What happened to the ticketless travellers - the bugs and the rats - is not known!
