Udupi: Swami Vishweshateertha Begins 3-Day Fast over UPCL Issue

Udupi, Jan 9: Swami Vishweshateertha of Pejavar Mutt began a three-day fast at Durgaparameshwari temple hall, Nandikur, near here at 10.30 am on Monday January 9, seeking explanation from state administration for sacking two members of the expert committee that was studying the environmental issue concerning Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) power plant in Nandkoor, near here.
Y B Ramakrsihna and Ramachandra had been appointed as members of the experts committee on the suggestion of Swami Vishweshateertha, but were dropped later without consulting or even informing him, which angered the Swami.
When Swami Vishweshateertha spoke to chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda, the CM reportedly said that the step was taken on the recommendation of district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya. Both Ramakrishna and Ramachandra were removed from the committee a few days ago. The CM is said to have agreed that the power plant poses a little environmental damage, which could be curbed with the latest technology to some extent.
Swami Vishweshateertha is in touch with RSS Pramuk Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and minister Dr V S Acharya in this regard. Swami Vishweshateertha also urged Sadananda Gowda to re-appoint two experts that were suggested by him.
Puttige Swami Sugunendrateerta, Kemaru Swami Esha Vittaldas, Belgaum Swami Bhaktiteerta, Jan Jagruti Samiti executive president Balakrishna Shetty Dubai, Raita Sangh district president Vijay Kumar Shetty and hundreds of locals were present.
Meanwhile, Dr V S Acharya in a statement urged Swami Vishweshateertha to end his fast.
