Udupi, Jan 9: Swami Vishweshateertha of Pejavar Mutt began a three-day fast at Durgaparameshwari temple hall, Nandikur, near here at 10.30 am on Monday January 9, seeking explanation from state administration for sacking two members of the expert committee that was studying the environmental issue concerning Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) power plant in Nandkoor, near here.

Y B Ramakrsihna and Ramachandra had been appointed as members of the experts committee on the suggestion of Swami Vishweshateertha, but were dropped later without consulting or even informing him, which angered the Swami.

When Swami Vishweshateertha spoke to chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda, the CM reportedly said that the step was taken on the recommendation of district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya. Both Ramakrishna and Ramachandra were removed from the committee a few days ago. The CM is said to have agreed that the power plant poses a little environmental damage, which could be curbed with the latest technology to some extent.

Swami Vishweshateertha is in touch with RSS Pramuk Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and minister Dr V S Acharya in this regard. Swami Vishweshateertha also urged Sadananda Gowda to re-appoint two experts that were suggested by him.

Puttige Swami Sugunendrateerta, Kemaru Swami Esha Vittaldas, Belgaum Swami Bhaktiteerta, Jan Jagruti Samiti executive president Balakrishna Shetty Dubai, Raita Sangh district president Vijay Kumar Shetty and hundreds of locals were present.

Meanwhile, Dr V S Acharya in a statement urged Swami Vishweshateertha to end his fast.

FIRSTLY ALL SWAMIJI'S SHOULD BE IN UNITY. AS SAID UNITY IN DIVERSITY THEN THEY HAVE TO TAKE PEOPLE TO CONFIDENCE TO URGE THE CONCERNED TO TAKE NECESSARY STEPS REGARDING CAUSE OF CONCERN. MERELY CLOSURE IS NOT THE SOLUTION. DEVELOPMENT IS INEVITABLE. EVERY ACTION SHOULD BE NON POLITICAL AND FAVOURABLE TO THE SUFFERERS TO SOME EXTENT IF NOT 100%. FOR EVERY PROBLEMS THERE SHOULD BE PROPER ASSESMENT IN ALL ANGLES AND THERE WILL BE SOLUTION
IN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO THE UPCL ISSUE.

With all due respect to swamiji one has to ask why is he not doing anything when Udupi mathas are selling their land which includes forests like kuntalu kadu in Manipal? With UPCL people of Udupi and Mangalore enjoy uninterrupted power and students can study for exam without resorting to candles for past 2-3 years. There is also lot of direct and indirect development all around due to this uninterrupted power supply. Swamiji should first ask himself why Udupi mathas are selling forest land to developers.

Congratulations to Swamiji. You have done right thing to draw the attention of the authorities on the destruction of cultivable land including fruit bearing trees, jasmine flowers et. due to the hot fly ash and affluent discharged from the UPCL. I wish all success in your mission.

Dear Swamiji, with due respect, please take care of your health. This is not the time and age to fast. Just look, what happened to Anna! Let the young and angry generation do the fasting business.

I think all this is going to far. Swami should end his fast I mean fasting isn't going to do anything and even if it does fasting will make him even slimmer then he is now and it's going to effect his health.
