Islamabad, Jan 10 (IANS): An American think tank is worried about the life of Pakistan's former envoy to the US Husain Haqqani, who is neck-deep in the 'memo scandal' these days, Geo News reported.

Haqqani submitted his resignation last November to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the wake of memo scandal.

Retired functionaries of the US administration, who now work as a think tank, have written to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that Haqqani is under loads of pressure in Pakistan with his life in danger, the Geo report said.

In the same letter, they have also urged Clinton that the US government must step in to ensure Haqqani's corporal safety and go as far as talking to authorities in Pakistan in this regard.

Copies of the letter have also been sent to the US vice president as well as the heads of defence department and the CIA, the report added.

Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claims to have handed over a memo to the then US military chief Gen. Mike Mullen at the behest of Haqqani and the Pakistani government to avert a likely military coup, which President Asif Ali Zardari feared would follow Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden's killing last May at Abbottabad near Islamabad.

Pakistan's Supreme Court has set up a three-member commission headed by Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa to investigate into the scandalous memo issue.

Besides the judicial commission, a 17-member parliamentary panel -- Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) -- is also investigating the memo issue.
