Beltangady: Archbishop George Alencherry Appointed Cardinal

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jan 11: Pope Benedict XVI announced Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly of Syro-Malabar Church of India, George Alencherry, as the Cardinal, on January 6.  The priest, born on April 19, 1945, had been named as cardinal-designate some time back.

Beltangady, Bhadravati, and Mandya diocese of Karnataka fall under the administration of the new Cardinal. He was chosen from India as one among the 22 newly appointed Cardinals from across the globe. The Cardinals are considered close confidantes of the Pope, and they together are entitled to choose the new Pope.

Mar Alanchery had served with the Changanassery Archdiocese from 1976 to 1978 as director of its religious school and as secretary of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council. He had also served as the Vicar General of the Changanassery Archdiocese. In February, 1997, he took charge as the first Bishop of the Thakkala Diocese, which was constituted in 1996.

The appointment of Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly of Syro-Malabar Church of India, George Alencherry as Cardinal is an excellent news for Christians all over India.

Lots of Catholic priests from Kerala were sent to Germany to work as pastors and to be in charge of parishes and Indian nuns, for example Franciscan Ursulines , work in Germany and have been doing a good work.

Indian priests and nuns are very friendly and polite and after a short time they won the trust of the parishioners.

Indians priests and nuns offer spiritual help and nuns work at elderly homes. They look after the old and poor, take care of them and dedicate their life to them.

And it is often surprising how fast they pick up German.

They live a convincing life as religious people.

There is a blatant shortage of Catholic priests in Germany and only less young German men would like to become Catholic priests.

George Alencherry has done a good job in his diocese and his appointment will attract many more young Indian men and women to become priests and nuns.

    Best regards
