Mangaluru: Konkani Writers' Association award conferred on litterateur Alice Fernandes

Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Renowned litterateur Alice Fernandes was conferred with the annual literary award in a ceremony by the Konkani Writers' Association, Karnataka, held on Saturday, February 15, at Sandesha Foundation, Mangaluru.

Association convenor Richard Moras, who presided over the ceremony, said the main purpose of the association is to support and encourage Konkani writers of Karnataka who use the Kannada script. He criticized the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, for considering only Konkani literature produced in the Nagari script for awards and honours. He stressed the need to shift the focus to literature itself rather than the script used.

Alice Fernandes (pen name Shalini, Valencia), while narrating her literary journey, thanked the association for selecting her for this year’s award.

Fr Rupesh Madtha, editor of Raknno and chief guest of the event, expressed concern over the impact of artificial intelligence, warning that it could diminish the literary zeal of writers in the coming years. He urged writers to be prepared for this challenge.

Social worker Audy Rego, guest of honour, appreciated the efforts of the association in supporting writers.

On the occasion, 'Mhajya Vantyacho Suryo,' a book by Dr Charles Lobo, was released. Several Konkani writers and artists who have won awards in recent years were felicitated.

Dr Edward Nazareth welcomed the gathering, executive committee member Dolphy Lobo introduced the awardee, and Dr Annie Castelino read the citation.

Executive committee member Henry Mascarenhas proposed the vote of thanks, while Lavina Mascarenhas compered the event.

Dignitaries including renowned Konkani and Kannada writer Fr Prashanth Madtha, former Raknno editor Fr Eric Crasta, and noted artist Francis Fernandes were present.
