Mysore: Acid Victim Dr Mahalaxmi Finally Gets Justice

Daijiworld Media Network – Mysore (VA)

Mysore, Jan 13: After going through all sorts of ordeals in life, Dr Mahalaxmi has something to cheer. Though it took exactly 11 years for the justice to arrive in her favour, the constant struggle to send her perpetrator behind bars has paid off.

Chikkabasavaiah, who is nearing 60 now, has been sentenced three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 penalty. The case was in the lower court for five years and six years at the High Court.

Dr Mahalakshmi  : Before acid attack and now...

The most dreadful incidence in Dr Mahalaxmi’s life took place when her former landlord threw acid on her, which completely ruined her life. She lost her left eye and an ear. Despite all this, with indomitable spirit and will power she led her life and continued battling for justice.  She worked as a medical officer in Chamundi Hills for quite a long time. Currently she is rendering her services at a government hospital, at Ashokpuram

Speaking to Daijiworld Dr Mahalaxmi says she is delighted at the High Court verdict and respects it. It was a long battle, she admits and says she always believed that one fine day justice would be granted to her. She remains grateful to state Government of Karnataka and the media for extending all the support to her.

Dr Mahalaxmi’s episode is a true example for women to remain strong in difficult situations and fight the oddities of life in a bold manner.

    Dear Mr. Leslie,

It never was a question of excusing or not excusing. I never missed the woods for the trees in your comment. What was important and much appreciated was the weight of your sentiments in this travesty of the so called justice that was handed out.

The sentence was a joke no doubt. However, the question is why it took the "My Lords in black robes" 11 years to hand out even that? Perhaps the "learned" judges wanted evidence and witnesses ?? One look at that burnt out face of the lady, and it should not have taken more than 5 minutes for these "My Lords" to condemn the criminal to a lifer without parole. However, if their hearts too are black, the justice we all sort won't come that easily and when it comes even after 11 years, it is the shocking 3 years (which means, with "good conduct", the criminal would be out on the streets within 20 months or sooner.

    Regards,

    JDS

THIS CRERATES A PREEDENCE TO VENTURE MORE SUCH TYPE OF GHASTY CRIMES SINCE IN CASE IF HE CAUGHT HE CAN DRAG FOR DECADES IN VARIOUS COURTS AND THE AWARDED PUNISHMENT IS NOTHING INFRONT OF PUBLICITY HE IS GETTING. BETTER CONSIDERING HIM SENIOR CITTIZEN COURT COULD HAVE LET HIM FREE TO DO SOME THING SPL.

Sentenced for only three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 penalty? How disgusting our Justice System in India. This coward not only defaced the women but deceive the general public from taking useful services of a professional Doctor too. Here we really miss the Justice System of Saudi Arabia though it is very cruel to human kind but some people like Chikkabasavaiah deserve this treatment

It is highly commendable to note that all Daiji World readers except 3 people fully agree with everybody’s comments in this article. It is very true that “Together We Can”

Awake India and its judicial system. Not a single person is happy to hear your justice except Dr. Mahalakshmi. Comparing to the trouble she went thru and self dignity is very painful. As the justice is obtained after 11 years the compensation should also be the same measure or double. Is the judge so "kunjuse" in giving the free justice!. If it had happened to his own members, would he be self satisfied for his so called justice!.

Dr. Mahalakshimi congrats for the least justice.

Though the punishment is a pittance compared to the trauma that Dr. Mahalakshmi has gone through, it is at least justice at last. Law is sometimes ironic, as it never fully compensates for the crime done.

THIS GUY WHO THREW ACID ON MAHALAKSHIMI MUST BE JAILED FOR 50 YEARS AND A PENALTY OF 50 LAKHS SHOULD BE SLAPPED ON HIM. THE WORK OF THE JUDGES IS RIDICULOUS SLAPPING HIM WITH 20000 PEANUTS AND THREE YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT. WE CAN BE SURE THAT HE MUST HAVE PAID A HANDSOME AMOUNT ALREADY TO THE JUDGE BEFORE GETTING THIS LIGHTER PUNISHMENT. JAI HOO, LOKAYUKTA.... JAI HOOO.....

Oh No, this Chikabasavaiah, getting rigorous imprisonment of three years and to pay fine of Rs. 20,000/-. He should never be hanged but instead of that, he should be given the same acid treatment on his face and other parts on his body, so that he is totally crippled, without eyes and limbs and recover a minimum of Rs. 20 lakhs from his assets, and he should be thrown on the road, so that it becomes deterrent for others not to venture on this type of activities on others. These type of criminals do not deserve any mercy.

Why our judicial system is so lenient and taking so long to deliver the judgement when all the required evidences are available in the court in such cases.Three years and paltry Rs.20,000/-as penalty is not enough for him.He should have been either hanged or shot dead in front of the public. At least that would have been a lesson for others who indulge in such criminal acts.Shame on our judiciary. What about that poor Doctor who lost her one eye and one ear besides being fought for 11 years continuously.Justice has been bestowed on her what about her mental agony, torture and ordeals she has undergone?Anybody is there to give her any kind of compensation or an aid?

Dr. Mahalaxmi you are great! After going through such a bad situation, still you continued your fight for justice for a long period of 11 years and succeeded in it. May God bless you abundantly and wish you every success in the years to come. Measuring your suffering and the body shape, the punishment given to that BASAVA is nothing, instead he should have been punished by cutting his parts one by one. Anyways, you became an example for other less fortunate women also

How can we claim that India will be a super power if this is how our justice system works ? Anyway, who wants to be a super power if this is the kind of justice system we have. Our laws are archaic, primitive or suitable for an era gone by long, long ago. We need desperately to bring our laws and justice system up to date where the punishment befits the crime and the time taken for process of justice does not take an indefinite period of time.

It is very hard to digest the feeling of someone throwing acid on somebody else. This can be termed as the most callous of crime even ranking higher than murder. This man must be punished the same way as that for murder.
We do not know the situations that led to this ghastly crime. However whatever instigation can not amount to such reaction. This is beastly and unpardonable.
Chickbasavayya must spend all his life behind bars living each moment in the memory of his crime.
Unfortunately he will be out in 3 years (thanks to forgiving standards of our great nation) and may even become an MLA, MP or even minister afterwards.
Coming generation, please recognize this demon every time and do not allow him to undermine our emotions again.
