Johannesburg, Feb 21: External affairs minister S Jaishankar has emphasized that the G20’s ability to harmonise viewpoints is crucial in advancing the global agenda amid rising geopolitical complexities.

Jaishankar, who is in South Africa for the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, addressed the session titled ‘Discussion on the Global Geopolitical Situation’, where he underscored the significance of the G20 as a reflection of the world’s growing multi-polarity.

Speaking on Thursday, Jaishankar highlighted key challenges affecting the global order, including:

• Aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic
• Ongoing conflicts and financial pressures
• Food security concerns
• Climate-related issues

Additionally, he pointed out modern challenges such as the concentration of supply chains, weaponisation of trade and finance, and the transparency of data flows.

"Looking ahead, differential progress on artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, space, drones, and green hydrogen will have clear geopolitical implications," he added.

Jaishankar stressed that the G20 represents diverse interests, cultures, and perspectives, making it imperative to find common ground to address global concerns.

"The polarisation of recent years has created visible stress and distorted priorities. Our responsibility is not just to safeguard the G20 but also to push it beyond its current limitations," he said.

During the meeting, Jaishankar also outlined India’s position on critical issues, including:

• West Asia affairs
• Maritime security
• The Ukraine conflicts
• The Indo-Pacific strategy
• United Nations reforms

With increasing global uncertainty, the minister reiterated the need for collective and cooperative solutions, reinforcing the G20’s role as a platform for inclusive dialogue and international consensus-building.
