Vatican City, Feb 23: Pope Francis’ health has deteriorated over the past 24 hours, with the Vatican confirming his condition as “critical” for the first time. The 88-year-old pontiff is battling a severe respiratory crisis, requiring supplemental oxygen and blood transfusions, Vatican officials said on Saturday.

Admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to breathing difficulties, Pope Francis was diagnosed with double pneumonia. The Vatican reported that he needed high-flow oxygen on Saturday morning to manage a severe respiratory episode. Doctors have also administered blood transfusions to address a low platelet count caused by anemia.

While the Pope remains alert and spent the day in a chair, officials acknowledged that he is suffering more than yesterday and is not yet out of danger. For the second consecutive Sunday, he will not appear for the traditional Angelus prayer, an unusual absence.

Medical experts warn that double pneumonia can lead to severe lung inflammation, and at his age, complications like sepsis remain a serious threat. Having lost part of a lung to pleurisy in his youth, Pope Francis is particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections.

Leading the Catholic Church since 2013, Pope Francis has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. As concerns over his condition grow, the Vatican remains cautious about his prognosis.
