New Delhi, Feb 23: Amid US President Donald Trump's sharp criticism of USAID’s funding in India, the Finance Ministry’s latest annual report reveals that the $750 million assistance from the US agency in 2023-24 was directed toward developmental projects in agriculture, rural development, energy, and environmental sustainability—not political activities.

According to the report, seven USAID-funded projects, with a combined budget of approximately $750 million, were implemented in partnership with the Indian government. For the 2023-24 fiscal year, USAID allocated $97 million (about ?825 crore) toward these initiatives.

The projects span critical sectors, including agriculture and food security, water and sanitation (WASH), renewable energy, disaster management, and healthcare. Additionally, funds were dedicated to the Sustainable Forests and Climate Adaptation Programme and the Energy Efficiency Technology Commercialisation and Innovation Project, the report highlights.

Trump’s allegations stirred controversy after he accused the Biden administration of using USAID to channel $21 million into voter turnout efforts in India to sway elections.

Reacting to these claims, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar acknowledged concerns, stating, "Some information has emerged from the Trump administration, and it is certainly concerning. The government is examining the matter. USAID was allowed to operate in India in good faith to support developmental activities. However, if there is any truth to the allegations of misuse, the country has a right to know who is responsible."

Meanwhile, the Congress party has called for a white paper detailing all foreign developmental funds received in India, demanding transparency over aid mechanisms and their utilization.
