Pratapgarh, Feb 24: A Class 12 student allegedly took his own life after he was denied his admit card for board examinations due to unpaid school fees, police reported on Monday.

The incident occurred late Sunday night into early Monday morning in the Akhou Naubasta village under the jurisdiction of Jethwara police station. According to police, the student, identified as 18-year-old Shivam Singh, hanged himself from a tree behind his house.

Rajendra Singh, Shivam's father, lodged a formal complaint stating that his son was enrolled at Sadhuri Shiromani Inter College in Dhansari. Due to financial constraints, the family had been unable to pay the student’s school fees. Singh alleged that when his son went to collect his admit card for the upcoming board exams, the school administration refused to issue it until the fees were cleared, sending him away in distress.

Devastated by the refusal, Shivam is believed to have taken the extreme step that night. In response to the complaint, a case has been filed under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the principal and manager of the college. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident.

The incident comes as Uttar Pradesh begins its board examinations for both Class 10 and Class 12 students, with more than 54 lakh students registered for the exams, including a significant number from the 12th grade.
