Fake currency circulation: Absconding accused arrested in Bantwal

Bantwal, Feb 27: The Bantwal police have arrested an accused who had been absconding after attempting to circulate counterfeit currency worth lacs of rupees. The accused has now been produced before the court.

In 2024, three individuals had attempted to circulate fake currency in the shops of B C Road. While two of them were caught by the police, one managed to escape. The arrested accused were identified as Muhammad C A and Khamarunnisa, both residents of Kerala. However, their accomplice, identified as Sharif P A from Chengala, Kerala, had been on the run. The Bantwal police team has now apprehended him in Vidyanagar, Kasargod.

The gang used to visit shops in a car and carefully circulate counterfeit Rs 500 notes. They would purchase items worth Rs 10 or slightly more but less than Rs 100, receive genuine change, and leave after successfully exchanging fake notes for real currency. However, their suspicious activities raised doubts among shop owners, who alerted the police. Acting on the tip-off, a team led by City police inspector Anantapadmanabha and SI Ramakrishna had successfully arrested two of the accused earlier.
