Davanagere, Mar 1: In a landmark judgment, a Karnataka court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ?30,000 for raping a minor girl. The convict, Usman, exploited the victim under the pretext of reclaiming a ?10,000 loan he had earlier given to her deceased father.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Srirama Narayana Hegde, with Public Prosecutor Sunanda B. Madivalara presenting arguments in favor of the victim. The crime, which took place on November 16, 2006, was registered at the Davanagere Women's Police Station.

According to the case details, Usman had frequently visited the victim’s home, demanding repayment after her father passed away due to health issues. Taking advantage of her vulnerability, he assaulted her when she was alone.

This ruling is part of Karnataka’s ongoing crackdown on crimes against women. Courts in the state have recently delivered swift and severe judgments in similar cases.

In another significant verdict, a Special Court in Karnataka sentenced all 12 accused in the brutal gangrape of a Bangladeshi woman in Bengaluru. The incident, which took place on May 18, 2021, in Kanaka Nagar under the Ramamurthy Nagar police station limits, shocked the public. The perpetrators not only committed the heinous act but also recorded the crime and made the video viral. Seven of the accused received life imprisonment.

Additionally, on January 28, a 24-year-old man from Mangaluru was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and impregnating a minor girl. Despite denying the charges, a DNA test confirmed that he was the biological father of the victim’s child.

These cases highlight the judiciary’s firm stance against sexual crimes, reinforcing the message that justice will be delivered swiftly and strictly in Karnataka.
