J&K Assembly erupts over PoK development and saffron mission controversy

Daijiworld Media Network – Jammu

Jammu, Mar 4: A stormy session in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday saw heated exchanges between National Conference (NC) and BJP legislators over the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asserted that the development seen in PoK was not driven by Pakistan but rather facilitated by China.

Speaking on the matter, CM Abdullah stated, “We must acknowledge that while our border areas have seen limited development, the other side has deliberately projected progress. However, this so-called development was made possible by China, not Pakistan.” He further emphasized that India has not relied on foreign assistance for its infrastructure development in frontier regions.

Taking a dig at the portrayal of growth in PoK, Abdullah remarked, “The PoK government dressed people in coats to create an illusion of prosperity, but those coats have empty pockets.”

Controversy over national saffron mission

Meanwhile, the Assembly also witnessed a heated debate over alleged malpractice in the Rs 401 crore National Saffron Mission (NSM). NC MLA from Pampore, Justice (Retd.) Hasnain Masoodi, supported by CPI(M) MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami from Kulgam, raised concerns over irregularities in the ambitious scheme meant to revitalize saffron production in Kashmir.

They called for a thorough investigation to determine whether funds were misused or if the project was mismanaged. Agriculture Minister Javed Dar responded, acknowledging the concerns and assuring the House that the department was reviewing the matter. “If necessary, we will initiate a departmental inquiry,” he said.

The National Saffron Mission, launched in 2010 by the UPA government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, aimed to modernize saffron cultivation, enhance irrigation, and improve yields. However, allegations of mismanagement, financial discrepancies, and project failure have cast doubt on its effectiveness.

Walkout over Article 370 and PSA

Adding to the day’s political turbulence, Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone staged a walkout in protest after the Speaker rejected his motion seeking amendments related to Article 370, the Public Safety Act (PSA), and police verification policies.

With multiple controversies unfolding, the J&K Assembly remains at the center of intense political debates, reflecting the broader challenges facing the region.
