Metro rail project between Mangaluru-Udupi gains momentum

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 5: The state government has initiated steps to develop a master plan for a metro rail project connecting Mangaluru and Udupi.

The proposed 64-kilometer intercity metro rail link aims to connect Mangaluru, Udupi, and Manipal. The state government has directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to conduct a detailed technical and financial feasibility study for the project. Official communication regarding this has also been sent to the deputy commissioners of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Former KPCC secretary Mohan Das Hegde, in a letter to health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and industries minister M B Patil, proposed that the metro route be developed to include major cities, suburban areas, and industrial zones between Mangaluru and Manipal. He highlighted that this project could boost economic growth, support urban development, and streamline the transportation network in the region.

Hegde noted that the existing road-based transport system is heavily congested, leading to significant travel delays. Given the growing population, a metro rail network is seen as a suitable solution to improve transit efficiency.

Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan confirmed receiving a letter from the government about the proposed metro project. He stated that BMRCL would conduct the study, and future steps would be based on its findings.

A very good decision by government, for taking this initiative early enough. It will reduce the traffic on our highway. Would be convenient for locals to travel for work between the cities. Please make sure to do it with minimal environmental impact. I'd also like to suggest the government and daijiworld to make an article about garbage problem in Udupi district. Please bring a recycle plant that can recycle garbage from both the cities. Please spread awareness among the citizens about recycling and basic civic sense. Locals here in brahmavar throw garbage in jungle, beside road, rivers, etc and it needs to be stopped immediately.

It is a very good decision of the government. The detailed project report should be prepared with connecting mlore international airport and not only mlore to udupi. On road bases. It is a very good move. phase 2 should have mlore- subrahmanya - Dharmasthala.

Metro is not required between Manipal and Mangalore. It is well connected with Express Buses. It will kill a lot of jobs and this project will only benefit politicians as they will make money using this project. The tax money will not be recovered and it will generate in overall loss for the exchequer

Existing railway track takes two -three hours or more from Mangalore to Udupi due to sigle track and give way. They should have done two tracks originally. Now the cost may be 50 times more. About metro and its land aquisition may take minimum 20 years. and another 10 to 15 years for the tracks!! Good news is there is a desire to initiate.

Good point about 2nd track. Konkan Railway has to be blamed. If I not wrong, MPs from both the districts did mention that Mumbai Mangaluru line will become part of Southern or South Western Zine soon. Once that is done, funds can come more freely. 2nd line with provision to add 3rd line can benefit not only run local trains, but also help long distance trains. ICF just stared manufacturing new generation of air conditioned local trains. Cost wise, adding new railway track and upgrading existing train stations will cost much less compared to building new Metro line on 67 km line.

Good idea, however, this won’t materialise and will remain a project on paper. The strong bus lobby on this very lucrative route will scuttle this project . They even ensured the AC buses run by KSRTC on the Mangalore Udupi Manipal route were stopped.
