Mangalore: NYF - Graceful Folk Arts, High-energy Kambala Grab Attention on Day 4

Mangalore, Jan 15: Day 4 of the 17th National Youth Festival was an action-packed one, with 'Nethravathi - Phalguni Jodukere Kambala' at Pilikula Nisargadhama and a visual treat of folk dances together with splendid array of classical music.
At TMA Pai auditorium on Sunday January 15, an urban tribal fusion folk dance by a team from Chandigarh, performed during their festival, marriage ceremonies and during 'Punam mela' was enjoyed by the jam-packed audience. It resembled ‘kolata’ of Karnataka. The team constituting 17 members wearing colourful costumes and with ribbons and red flags grabbed the attention of the spellbound audience.
A team from Gujarat also presented a folk dance depicting the socio-economic background of tribal community and also the arrival of seasons. Two men on tablas at the centre were flanked by girls encircling them.
The vibrant culture of Kerala came alive with a team performing folk dance, however, an effort to make human pyramid by the artistes went futile and three artistes including a woman was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries. Neverthless, an amazing fire stunt by the Kerala artistes made up for it.
'Karam Puja', a folk dance by artistes from Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the audience awestruck.
'Navanya', a folk dance of Tripura elaborated the puja performed during harvest of crops in the field. Bappaditya Chakraborthy, a tabla artiste from Tripura who was amongst the audience said that it is a folk dance of their land expressing happiness of a farmer.
Folk dance troupes from various other states exhibited their best on the stage.
At SDM Law college, Jeetharam of Himachal Pradesh, S Arun Prakash of Tamil Nadu, Dheeraj Upendra of Jharkhand, Manmohan Preeth Singh of Punjab also presented different ‘taals’ in tabla competition. About 150-strong audience cheered on the performers with thunderous rounds of applause.
In the afternoon guitar competition was held. J Muthukrishna from Tamil Nadu, Gaurav Singh Thakur of Madhya Pradesh and Ram Lohani of Uttarakand performed.

The fifth edition of 'Nethravathi - Phalguni Jodukere Kambala' was inaugurated by District In-charge minister Krishna J Palemar, at Pilikula Nisargadhama near here on Sunday.
The event, being organised by the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Kambala Samiti, bears the name of two rivers which are the lifeline of the districts.
Though the annual event is held in the month of February every year, this year the organisers advanced it to make it a part of the 17th National Youth Festival.
The popular folk sport of Tulunadu was held at the serene 134-metre long field “Bakimaru Gadde”, which is a part of the Nisargadhama's Heritage village. The field located in front of the traditional house “Guttina Mane” was spruced up for the occasion.
More than 135 racing pairs are taking part in this spectacular event, according to the organizers. The races are being held in different categories such as Hagga Hiriya, Hagga Kiriya, Kane Halage, Negilu Hiriya, Negilu Kiriya and Adda Halage.
Principal secretary of department of youth service and sports I R Perumal presided over the inaugural programme. Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner N S Channappa Gowda, Mulky-Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain and Karnataka State Bus Owners’ Federation president Rajavarma Ballal were present on the occasion.
