Uproar in J&K assembly over Kathua civilian killings

Srinagar, Mar 10: Chaos erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday as National Conference (NC) and Congress MLAs demanded an urgent discussion on the killing of three civilians in Kathua district.

NC and Congress legislators stood on their seats, insisting on the suspension of question hour to debate the deteriorating law and order situation under Central rule. Alleging a worsening security scenario in recent years, they pressed for accountability.

BJP MLAs countered the allegations, asserting that the killings were the handiwork of Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. They highlighted that Lt Governor Manoj Sinha had ordered a thorough probe and urged the House to wait for the investigation report.

Congress MLAs submitted an adjournment motion seeking immediate discussion, while Independent MLA Rajeshwar Singh stormed into the well of the House, alleging that BJP workers had attacked him when he visited the victims’ families.

Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh had already confirmed on Sunday through a post on X that the three civilians were killed by terrorists.

The victims, identified as Varun Singh (15), his uncle Yogesh Singh (32), and maternal uncle Darshan Singh (40), went missing on Thursday while heading to a wedding. Their bodies were later spotted using drones in Ishu Nallah, Malhar, during a joint operation by J&K Police and the Army.

The tragic incident has triggered fresh concerns over security in the region, with locals claiming to have seen unidentified suspects in the area before the killings.
