Patna, Mar 15: Days after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was killed in Bihar’s Araria district, another police officer, Santosh Kumar Singh, succumbed to injuries following an attack in Munger district late Friday night.

Munger SP Syed Imran Masood confirmed that ASI Singh, who suffered severe head injuries, passed away at 4 am on Saturday in Patna. The attack took place in Nandlalpur village under Mufassil police station limits.

Singh, who had been serving at Mufassil police station for a year, was responding to reports of a drunken brawl involving one Ranveer Kumar. As he tried to intervene, Ranveer and his family members attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, inflicting fatal skull injuries, said Sadar SDPO Abhishek Anand.

Despite immediate medical attention, Singh’s condition worsened, and he was shifted to Patna, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The district police have arrested five accused so far, while efforts are ongoing to nab the remaining culprits. A murder case has been registered against Ranveer and his family members.

This incident follows the March 12 killing of ASI Rajiv Ranjan Mall in Araria. Mall, posted at Fulkaha police station, was fatally injured while attempting to arrest an accused, facing violent resistance from villagers.

With back-to-back attacks on police personnel, the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar is under sharp political scrutiny, as opposition parties prepare to question CM Nitish Kumar’s government over rising crime and attacks on law enforcement officers.
