Udupi, Mar 14: A fire broke out accidentally in a field near Moodunidamburu Garadi in the city on Saturday evening, covering Udupi in thick smoke.
However, as the field was surrounded by an underground drainage system, the fire did not spread beyond the area.

Fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Despite their efforts, smoke lingered over the city until late at night. As there were overhead power lines above the fire-affected area, electricity supply was temporarily cut off as a precautionary measure.
In a separate incident, a garbage pile near MIT in Manipal also caught fire, which was promptly extinguished by the fire brigade.
