Mumbai, Mar 16: Mumbai police have launched a manhunt for a 40-year-old man accused of repeatedly raping his domestic worker in the Bangur Nagar area of Goregaon while his family members were away.

The crime came to light when the 35-year-old victim’s family registered a complaint at Bangur Nagar Police Station on Saturday. She was immediately sent for a medical examination, an official confirmed.

According to police reports, the accused assaulted the woman on two consecutive days in the past fortnight and threatened her with physical harm if she disclosed the crime. Fearing for her safety, the victim initially remained silent but later confided in her family, leading to the police complaint.

Following the first assault, the terrified woman continued working at the accused’s residence. However, after being raped again the next day, she stopped going to work. Her family grew suspicious of her absence and, upon questioning, she revealed the harrowing ordeal.

The accused has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions related to rape and criminal intimidation. Police have launched efforts to locate and arrest him.

This case adds to the rising number of crimes against women and children in Mumbai. Official data shows a 12% increase in such incidents in 2024 compared to the previous year. The city recorded 1,051 rape cases in 2024, up from 973 in 2023. Molestation cases surged from 2,055 in 2023 to 2,397 in 2024, while child sexual abuse cases saw a 21% rise, reaching 1,341 cases in 2024 compared to 1,108 the previous year.

Authorities continue to investigate the case and urge the public to report any information that may lead to the suspect’s arrest.
