Senior IPS officer Manish Shankar Sharma passes away, tributes pour in

Bhopal, Mar 17: Manish Shankar Sharma, Senior IPS officer and Special Director General of Police (Railways), Madhya Pradesh, passed away in the early hours of Monday at a hospital in New Delhi. The 58-year-old officer, who had been battling a prolonged illness, suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment.

A 1992-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Sharma had traveled to Delhi for a medical check-up when his condition worsened. His demise has left the police force and administrative circles in Madhya Pradesh in deep sorrow.

Sharma had an illustrious career, serving in various capacities within the United Nations, at the Centre, and in Madhya Pradesh. His father, Kripa Shankar Sharma, was a former Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, making his legacy one of significant public service.

An accomplished academic, Sharma held a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Public Policy from the University of California, with a specialization in International Security and Counter-Terrorism. With over 25 years of experience, he worked across four continents, contributing to global security and governance initiatives.

In recognition of his contributions to strengthening US-India ties, the Mayor of San Diego, USA, declared July 20, 2015, as ‘Manish S. Sharma Day’, an exceptional honor for an Indian officer.

Sharma is survived by his wife and two sons. His passing has been met with widespread grief across Madhya Pradesh. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, expressing his condolences, described Sharma as an honest and dedicated officer, calling his demise an irreparable loss for the state government and society.

"The untimely demise of Special DG Railways Manish Sharma is extremely saddening. His contributions to the state and the police force will always be remembered," Yadav stated.

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, along with several leaders from the BJP and Congress, also paid their respects.
"The news of the tragic demise of IPS Manish Sharma has come as a shock to all of us. Our deepest condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace and may his loved ones find strength in this difficult time," Tankha posted on social media.

Sharma’s legacy of service, integrity, and dedication will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
