Udupi, Mar 18: Tulunadu, known for its rich cultural heritage, hosts numerous temple festivals, each with its own unique traditions. One such distinct ritual takes place in Kemthur, Udupi, during the Vishnu Murthy deity's 'Katte Pooje'. The tradition, known as Tootedaara, is an awe-inspiring sight.

During the ceremony, coconut leaves are tied into small bundles, set on fire, and thrown into a vast field. These flaming projectiles are tossed by two groups of villagers in an energetic, yet controlled, manner. The Tootedaara ceremony is a long-standing tradition that occurs during the worship of the deity at the temple.

Similarly, in the Kateel Durga Parameshwari Temple festival, another spectacular Tootedaar tradition takes place. In the dark of the night, fiery bundles are thrown across the fields from one side to another, creating a mesmerizing scene. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness this thrilling event, making it a major attraction during the annual festival.

This tradition, which has been passed down through generations, continues preserving the unique customs of Tulunadu.
