Mangaluru, Mar 18: Dr Sandeep Shetty, professor & head, department of orthodontics at Yenepoya Dental College, has revolutionized the treatment of class III malocclusion with his innovative SAVE appliance.
This condition, characterized by the lower jaw (mandible) protruding ahead of the upper jaw (maxilla), can lead to functional and aesthetic issues, including difficulty in chewing, speaking, and jaw discomfort.
Traditional treatments for class III malocclusion rely on bulky, uncomfortable appliances, which patients often struggle to wear consistently, leading to poor compliance and extended treatment times.

However, Dr Shetty’s SAVE appliance [Sandeep Anjali(wife) Vrishin(son) Eishita(daughter)] is a lightweight, non-invasive device designed to correct maxillary deficiencies without surgery. It promises to reduce treatment time, improve comfort, and enhance patient compliance.
Dr Shetty’s groundbreaking research, documented in his PhD thesis titled ‘SAVE: A novel appliance and its finite evaluation for correction of deficient maxilla,’ demonstrated that the SAVE appliance is both effective and efficient, offering a non-surgical alternative to conventional methods.
The research has been praised for its potential to transform the treatment of class III malocclusion, providing a faster, more comfortable solution for patients. His startup has also been rewarded as the second-best investment ready startup by Karnataka Digital Economy mission, Government of Karnataka. Grants from The Big BIRAC of 49 lacs and 20 lacs elevate fund from Government of Karnataka.
With further clinical trials underway, the SAVE appliance is poised to set new standards in orthodontic care, offering hope for a more comfortable and effective treatment for class III malocclusion.
