Vinod Kumar Shukla wins prestigious 59th Jnanpith Award for 2024

New Delhi, Mar 22: Renowned Hindi author Vinod Kumar Shukla has been selected for the esteemed 59th Jnanpith Award for 2024, a recognition of his exceptional contributions to Hindi literature, his creativity, and his distinctive narrative style.

Shukla becomes the 12th Hindi writer to receive this coveted honor and the first from Chhattisgarh to earn the distinction.

The announcement was made during a session of the Jnanpith Pravar Parishad, presided over by eminent writer and Jnanpith laureate Pratibha Ray. The committee, which unanimously agreed to award Shukla, included members Madhav Kaushik, Damodar Mavji, Prabha Verma, Dr Anamika, Dr A Krishna Rao, Prafull Shiledar, Dr. Janaki Prasad Sharma, and Jnanpith Director Madhusudan Anand.

Born in January 1937, Shukla is a celebrated poet, novelist, and storyteller known for his accessible yet deeply reflective language. His innovative approach to modern Hindi literature has pioneered experimental writing that brings new perspectives to the literary world. His first poetry collection, Lagbhag Jai Hind (1971), marked the beginning of his prolific career. His renowned novels, such as Naukar Ki Kameez, Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi, and Khilega To Dekhenge, have received widespread acclaim.

Shukla's work masterfully captures the ordinary, elevating the simple moments of life into profound reflections of the human experience. His keen sensitivity to societal nuances and his ability to convey complex emotions resonate with readers across generations.

Throughout his career, Shukla has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, for his outstanding literary achievements.

The Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary recognition, is awarded annually for excellence in Indian literature. Along with a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh, the honor includes a bronze statue of Vaagdevi and a citation.

The selection of Vinod Kumar Shukla for the 2024 Jnanpith Award has been met with widespread joy among Hindi literature enthusiasts, recognizing his immense literary contributions and his unwavering commitment to the Hindi language.
