Sambhal, Mar 23: The Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested Zafar Ali, president of the Shahi Mosque Committee, for allegedly inciting the violent mob that led to the deaths of four people and left dozens injured in Sambhal on November 24 last year.

Ali faces multiple charges, including rioting, obstructing public servants, and fabricating evidence with the intent to falsely convict someone, police officials stated. His arrest followed the recording of his statement at Sambhal Kotwali, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra confirmed.

Ali underwent questioning on Saturday evening but was allowed to return home for prayers before being summoned again on Sunday morning, after which he was formally arrested. He is expected to be presented in court on Monday following a mandatory medical examination.

The arrest is linked to one of 12 FIRs filed against 159 individuals in connection with the violence. Police sources allege that Ali played a key role in orchestrating the unrest after learning about a proposed archaeological survey of the historical mosque. Authorities believe he actively incited locals to resist the survey, which had to be prematurely halted on November 19, 2024.

The clashes saw rioters using illegal foreign-made firearms, along with stone-pelting and arson, particularly in the Nakhasa Tiraha, Kotgarvi, and Hindupura Kheda areas. The violence forced many families to flee, with around 300 homes in the vicinity remaining locked since the incident.

Investigators are also examining reports that panic over possible demolitions led some residents to sell their properties hastily. Allegedly, individuals with criminal backgrounds exploited the situation to take possession of abandoned properties, adding another layer to the ongoing probe.
