Coimbatore, Mar 24: The Nehru Institute of Technology, Kaliyapuram, suspended 13 first-year BE and BTech students on Saturday following an alleged assault on a senior student in the college hostel. The incident, which surfaced through a viral video, has sparked widespread attention.
The victim, identified as Haathi, an MA criminology student at Nehru College of Arts and Science, was accused of stealing money from the first-year students’ hostel room. In retaliation, a group of 13 engineering students allegedly confined and assaulted him, recording the act on video.

The 1.42-minute clip, which went viral on social media, shows Haathi bare-chested, kneeling, and crying out in pain, claiming his left hand was injured. Despite his distress, the students continued to interrogate him.
Following the incident, principal Dr M Sivaraja took swift action, suspending the accused students from both the college and the hostel. The management clarified that the case was not related to ragging but was deemed a serious act of misconduct.
Both the injured student and the suspended students have been summoned before the college management on Monday for further inquiry. The students have been instructed to appear along with their parents, and they are strictly prohibited from entering the college premises until further notice.
