Jammu, Mar 24: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated on Monday that eliminating militancy is not solely the responsibility of the government but requires active support from the people.

Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Abdullah stressed the importance of public cooperation in maintaining security in the union territory. "While security is primarily a concern of the Union Home Ministry, my government is committed to assisting in keeping the situation under control. However, I have always maintained that militancy cannot be eradicated without the support of the people," he stated.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to inquiries about the ongoing anti-terror operation in Sanyal village, near the International Border in the Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.

Commenting on the operation, he said, “Incidents like these have occurred in the past. As per the latest reports, there has been no direct contact with terrorists yet. The search and cordon operation was launched based on suspicious movements, and the situation is still developing. Given that this incident took place in a border village, there is a possibility that infiltrators have come from across the border. However, it would be premature to draw conclusions at this stage.”

Abdullah also pointed out that recent terrorist activities in Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, and other regions seem to be deliberate attempts to disrupt the prevailing peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the anti-terror operation in Sanyal village continued for a second consecutive day on Monday. After an exchange of gunfire on Sunday evening, the situation has remained tense but without further engagement.

Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat is personally overseeing the operation, along with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti. Both senior officials were present at the encounter site on Sunday evening to assess the situation.
